The world likes action. People seek new things. They like movement. They do not want to be bored or be left behind. At the same time, they probably look to you for ideas.
In your current role, you cannot expect to progress in a linear fashion. Too much change is occurring and if you don’t keep up with the changes, you will go downhill. If you continue as you have been doing, you might run down, become bored and perhaps irrelevant.
Expect slow downs and speed ups:
Since life is a series of S curves, you can take advantage by “looking ahead”. Looking ahead simply means you develop valid ideas on what is next for yourself and those who count on you.
Use a tool to help frame your thinking. See the simple template suggestion below. This is a good way for you to formally stop, look and think on a monthly basis. The time line can be six months out or more. Ask, “Where do I think we can be six months from now?”
A template to guide your thinking:
A template I like contains four areas – they each serve as gateways to a large range of ideas.
• Next year – A view of new possibilities.
• Reality – What is happening now? No denial.
• Service – What more can we do to improve?
• Initiative – How good are we at sustaining progress?
Success occurs when you look ahead, extend the view beyond what you now have and raise expectations of what you think is possible.
Realize that you do all this before success occurs, not after. Your ideas are needed, more important than you may realize.
In a group of 25 people, I would bet that 23 are waiting for your lead.
